The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a major awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
