The Fifth Toy Story Film Teaser Sets Woody and Buzz Against a Digital Device
It has been 30 years after the first Toy Story film debuted, launching Pixar as a leading animation studio and introducing viewers to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
In 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a brief look into the plot but leaving fans curious how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang
The preview reveals Bonnie — who received the toy collection when he grew up — getting a latest toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie acquires her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.
Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the toys seem to view it as a danger coming to replace them, which it likely will.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4
An element the teaser doesn't touch on is what Woody is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and helping prize toys locate loving owners.
Surely, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him appear in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, however. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have returned with Woody. And what about the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?
Connections from the Previous Film
Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The final act Woody did before setting off for his fresh path was hand over his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), entrusting her in charge of the toy domain. In the teaser shows the badge pinned to her shirt.
Hopefully she is still the driving force among the group.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
