Space Traveler Reveals Depression Following Wave of Online Abuse Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her lab work and years of training to the historic significance of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Months following reaching space, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She noted that amid the criticism, considerable good had emerged from the flight, such as spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that passed the Kármán line of outer space.

The diverse crew also included leaders in multiple disciplines.

The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
