The Senate on this Tuesday gave swift approval to a measure that will force the release of case documents associated with the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after a overwhelming vote in the lower house and a reversal by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The White House relented after an extended period of trying to delay the joint action involving a case that has dogged the president since his comeback to the White House.
Swift Approval in Congress
Senators proceeded by general agreement, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a formal roll call vote, accelerating the process. Earlier that day, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a massive majority.
The public have been patient long enough. Those affected have waited long enough,” the Senate Democratic leader said in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to pass it unanimously. “Uncover the facts. Let transparency reign.”
Presidential Signature
The measure next goes to Trump for his endorsement. The president indicated on Monday that he would approve the bill.
Though Trump has for months rejected the uproar over the authorities' approach of the investigation as a “political stunt”, he signalled his support for the measure over the weekend, and stated he would give his assent if it is presented to him.
Response
Democrats, along with those affected and their advocates who were seated in a House gallery, broke into applause after the bill was passed. Lone dissent came from Clay Higgins, who said he worried the measure would make public personal information of individuals involved, potential suspects and others caught up in the investigation.
