Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying such drugs must be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle support.
